Things you’ll need:
-Baking soda
-White vinegar
-Washing up liquid
-Soft-bristled brush
-Sponge
-Large container (or bath)
-Essential oil (optional)
Before preparing to wash a picnic blanket, it’s important to remove the top layer of dirt and debris.
Lay the picnic blanket over the floor and use a soft-bristled brush to sweep any large debris away.
If available, use a small vacuum attachment to remove smaller piece of dust and dirt, such as crumbs, from the picnic blanket.
Top tip: If your picnic blanket has a hard, PV layer underneath, flip the blanket and use a sponge to wipe any dust and debris away.
Sprinkle baking soda across the picnic blanket and leave to sit for ten minutes. This will soak up any unpleasant odours.
Top tip: always test the white vinegar solution on a hidden area first
After ten minutes, spray white vinegar onto the baking soda covering hardened food stains to create a fizzing reaction. Leave for at least five minutes.
Use a soft bristled brush to remove most of the baking soda from the picnic blanket, and a damp sponge to remove the vinegar and baking soda solution.
Place the picnic blanket into a large container and fill with warm water. Add in one cup of white vinegar, a few drops of washing up liquid, and a few drops of essential oils if preferred.
Mix the solution until bubbles appear and gently scrub the picnic blanket.
Rinse the blanket with cool water and leave to air dry naturally.
Top tip: make sure that the picnic blanket is fully dry before storing as any damp patches will enable mould and mildew to grow
