It's important to know that the drying time can be long—anywhere from a few hours to overnight—and making sure it's completely dry before storing a sleeping bag is critical to its care.

Both are machine washable but use different detergents, and they need a large enough machine without a central agitator. Change into clean long underwear and socks for sleep. If it's warm out, at least wear a clean tee and underwear. A knit cap or clean bandana will keep oily hair off the bag’s hood. Sunscreen from your face and neck can soak into your bag, so wash or wipe off any before going to bed.

Down is a great insulator for a sleeping bag because it is warm, light, and packable. Down gear like sleeping bags and jackets can even last a decade or more--as long as you take the time to clean it. Dirt and oils prevent down from lofting, which is what makes it a great insulator. If you’ve used your down sleeping bag or quilt for a season or two, you’ll want to restore its warmth by giving it a wash. 

After extensive in-house testing, we've determined that you can confidently store a sleeping bag compressed — as long as it's completely dry. If you just returned from a trip, it's not a bad idea to store it loose for a couple days before stashing away in a smaller bag. When you get to camp, make sure to decompress your bag by leaving it unrolled and flat for a few hours (or as much time as you can) before using it — this will enable the down to loft back up and create a nice, puffy effect for a cozy sleep when you’re ready for bed!

Although you may love that coffee stain that sorta looks like a poorly-drawn bear or the musty smell of campfire and morning dew, cleaning your sleeping is extremely important.
